This is a post for all of you people that don’t want a big twelve pointer standing in your backyard. Deer are like goats, they will eat practically everything; your plants, vegetables, and anything that they can get their mouths on. They are not the smartest of creatures, but they all share one thing in common. That is, they are eating your vegetables and plants to survive and that is why they can be so persistent. So today I am here to talk about deer repellent. For those of you who are having some serious deer damage or problems, there is hope. I am going to talk about homemade deer repellent, repellents that you can buy, ultrasonic deer repellent devices, and a variety of other natural control methods.
The first step that a majority of people will try involves using some kind of chemical deer repellent. I can tell you from experience that liquid fence deer repellent works pretty well. Even though it is a chemical, it is safe for the environment too. So basically, most of these treatments are used to repel deer after the user has sprayed all of the plants that they want to protect. Simple right? Well here is where you have to pay attention to what you are doing. If you want to protect a vegetable or some plant that you plan on eating, then you need to make sure that the label or product states that it is safe or meant to be used on gardens where the customer is planning on eating the vegetables.
Ultrasonic Deer Repellent
Ultrasonic deer repellent is a pretty cool topic. These devices have been used on a variety of animals and have been pretty successful. I have used them myself on a variety of pests. Anyways, their purpose and how it works is simple. They emit ultra high sound frequency that sound a lot louder and annoying to deer than they do to humans. Most of them are supposed to be silent, but some customers have states that they have been able to hear a subtle humming noise. I haven’t been able to hear it on my model, but my grandmother had one a long time ago that I could hear. Controlling and repelling deer with ultrasonic devices is such a great idea because it works and is virtually maintenance free. Because deer can hear so much better than we can, the frequencies sound more like a jackhammer to them and that drives them away.
Natural Deer Repellent
Natural deer repellent involves homemade deer repellent recipes and barriers. Now, there are a lot of excellent homemade repellent recipes out there that are great. I used this one once and it was successful at controlling the deer and keeping them from damaging my plants in my garden. The recipe calls for 1 egg, ½ cup of milk, 1 tablespoon of cooking oil, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, and then I added a gallon of water. After doing all of that I shook it up real good. Now, this recipe was not meant for plants that were to be eaten. Other natural deer control methods include using a barrier such as a fence or net. Fences cost a bit of money just to keep deer out of a garden, but hey – it would work. You would have to make it a high fence because deer can jump really high in the air. Netted fences are much more practical; you know, the nets that most people hit golf balls into. Plot master is another little secret tip. It’s a tape fence that I have used to keep deer out of my garden as well.
